A said poem: after William Carlos Williams

by Jennifer Bishop

I have devoured
the plums
that were in
the refrigerator
even though
you never
thought
I would.
You were probably
saving them
for breakfast, but I don't care.
You have just
asked me to
get out of your
appartment, but I am not in too much of a hurry.
Forgive me,
the plums were delicious,
so sweet and juicy,
but I had to
eat them because
you were driving
me crazy.
Too bad you couldn't have any,
but that really isn't possible
now because they are all gone.
